Laminated glasses are made of two or more sheets of glass, which are bonded together with one or more plastic interlayers. The most popular interlayers are polyvinyl butyral (PVB) and ionoplast like SentryGlas (SGP), but there are also other types used, like ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA), polyurethane (PU), cast in place resin (CIP), and others. Each kind of interlayer has its own special properties and application area, but the main common feature and benefit of laminated glasses is their performance under impact - the interlayer keeps it together even if its constituent glass panes are broken. Another useful features of laminated glass, if compared to the monolithic glass pane, are the reduced transmission of ultra-violet radiation and better noise insulation.

There are lots of different laminated glass compositions possible, which can be made according to required functions and conditions. For example, here are some special applications for different interlayers:

EVA and CIP interlayers allow to produce beautiful decorative glass compositions with different decorative inserts like plants, photographs, or even coffee beans;
PVB and EVA interlayers are used for safety and security glazing, where safety means protection of people from injuries, and security means protection from manual attack, firearms, and explosions;
SGP interlayer is suitable for extra-strong structural applications;
PU interlayer is used for laminating of glass-polycarbonate-glass composites, which are used for especially strong burglar-resistant glazing;
there are also special intumescent interlayers for fire-resistant glazing, special acoustic interlayers for improved acoustic insulation, etc.
Also, the glass types for making the laminated glass composite can be chosen according to particular requirements - either tinted, clear, or coated, either annealed or heat treated.
