The float glass production process developed by Sir Alastair Pilkington in 1950s got its name from the molten glass floating over the bath of the molten tin. Introduction of this process, where the bottom glass surface is being ideally polished by molten tin and upper surface - by burning gas flames, dramatically increased global production output of the highest quality flat glass. Thanks to advantages of this process, all major flat glass producers obtained licenses on float glass production from Pilkington, and soon it became the most popular way of flat glass production all over the world. Depending on composition of raw materials, there can be different types and shades of clear and body tinted glasses, which can be further processed in different ways, like application of coatings, thermal treatment (tempering, heat strengthening), bending, lamination and production of insulating glass units.
