The purpose of solar control glazing is the protection of rooms from overheating caused by direct solar radiation. There are two main types of solar control glasses - body tinted and coated.

Body tinted glasses are produced by adding different metal oxides to the glass production components, and their solar protection efficiency depends on glass tint and thickness. Their working principle is based on blocking certain part of the visible solar light spectrum, which causes several unwelcome effects - significant reduction of light transmission, distorted color rendering, and heating up of glass caused by absorption of solar heat energy, which in turn increases the risk of breakage due to thermal stress, especially if there is also a Low-E glass present. Their ratio of visible light transmission against the blocked solar heat is close to 1:1, and some tints even block lighter than heat.

Coated high-performance solar control glasses are much more efficient on solar heat blocking while allowing plenty of natural daylight to pass into the building’s interior. The maximum amount of passed light depends on the required solar control rate. Modern triple silver coatings provide a rate of passed light against passed solar heat (selectivity) above 2:1.
